Gods Own Country - Kerala

Trip Introduction

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls…..Into that heaven of Freedom!” - lets visit Kerala!

The famous quotes from Tagore’s Gitanjali is what one can think of in Kerala! Fascinating views, elegant sceneries, awesome weather and incredible nature – no wonder its god’s own country!

Having heard a plethora of amazing experiences, it was time for me to explore the southern parts of the country. So quickly possible did I pack my bags and the next thing I remember, i was on a flight to kochi!

There are many flights to Kochi from major cities. From Kochi, you can opt for a drive- through to your destination as per your own convenience. Our first destination was Munnar. And, we opted for Kochi airport to start our drive to the beautiful hills!

It was a mesmerizing 4-5 hours’ drive from Kochi to Munnar! You can stop by to enjoy an elephant safari and a quick stop at few waterfalls! Also, do explore the spice gardens before you head to the hills!

Note: Ensure that you complete your drive before its dark as the roads are not very friendly.

Finally at Munnar!

The hills in Munnar leave you speechless in hunt for the right adjective to describe them! Perfect ambience, Romantic weather, Beautiful scenic moments and the lovely sunset – the picture perfect romantic evening date is what the place is blessed with!

If you are an adventure lover, do try Eravikulam national park trekking. Since the weather was nice in November, we didn’t really mind the sun companying us during the trek! The Tea Gardens are a treat to watch offering you a good background to your clicks. Apart from this, you can enjoy the echo point followed by a boat ride, Matupetty Dam and Rajamala peak!

Bye Munnar but Hello Alleppey!

With wonderful memories of Munnar we headed to Alleppey! Little did I know, that my best memories were to be rewritten by what was waiting ahead! The city was facing a political bandh that day, so we had to leave early morning from Munnar to Alleppey (which by the way is approx. 4.5 hours drive).

Alleppey is known for their wonderful deluxe houseboats and the life on water (eh, a lavish Life of Pi). With wonderful greetings and welcome drink, our house boat was ready to dive into the silent backwaters, canals and lagoons. The best way to describe this is to experience it! The calmness of the place along with its exquisite beauty leaves a powerful impact on you. Silent nights, still waters, beautiful canals and lovely people are the best way to describe it!

K..K.. Kerala ka Kovalam!

Few things are just not to be missed when you are in certain places! For ex: Tajmahal in Agra, Tunday kebab in Lucknow, Meetha in West Bengal and Kovalam in Kerala! While the other part of the city has beautiful hills, Kovalam surprises you with its fascinating beaches. It’s like an in-house Goa to Keralite!

Enjoy the lavish on-beach parties, shacks, candle light dinner by the Arabian ocean! De-stress yourself with the amazing ayurvedic spa therapy and the lip smacking delicious food! You can enjoy food on floating restaurants too!

Note : Alleppey to Kovalam is an approx 4 hours drive!

Trip Ends!

With mixed feelings it was time to head back home and say bye to south! Few things missed above are:

  • Shoppers: Don’t forget to buy the golden border Kanchipuram silk saree and “Mundu” for men! Amazing souvenirs waiting in store for family, friends, kids and everybody!
  • Foodies: You just can’t miss the fish there!
  • Photographers: The south is meant for you! Beaches, hills, canals, Houseboats and what not… in short blessing in disguise!
  • Art lovers: Hop into the local market and you can find amazing carvings and statues for sale.

Secret Note: We were charged for over weight luggage on our way back! (lips Sealed)!
