If Kashmir is heaven on earth for the mountain aficionados, beach bums like me would swear that Maldives is the tropical avatar of paradise on earth. Geographically, one of the most dispersed countries in the world; Maldives is a cluster of islands dotted across the Indian Ocean. An aerial view of the Maldive Islands is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring. A better location for a little R&R is hard to find.

The National Flag Of The Republic Of Maldives

Although the official language of the Republic of Maldives is Dhivehi, most people on the island speak English. There is a marked effect of various neighboring countries and their language and culture owing to the fact that islands of Maldives fall between the trading routes of the Indian Ocean. The influx of traders and visitors thus, not only brought prosperity but cultural and religious beliefs of all kind.

The capital city, Malé, has more of an air of a commercial district. An island and a city rolled into one, Malé has its own artificial beach and rather colourful skyscrapers. Maybe it’s the monotony of blue they wish to break. Since the Malé airport is another island altogether, you have to ferry to the Malé city in case you’re staying there or to one of the other islands inhabited by hotels as a whole. The local people in this laidback town are mostly fishermen or employed in the tourism industry. For those who live in metros, it is quite a surprise to see just about six vehicles on a traffic signal, that too, mostly two-wheelers. Another colourful aspect to the city is the interesting names people give their houses. Don’t be taken aback if a house says ‘forget-me-not’. You’ll also find Seashell, Sea-breeze, and Ocean Star among others.

How to get there

By Air

Although secluded, Maldives is quite easy to access from anywhere in South-East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Landing at the Malé International Airport is in itself an experience as the runway goes parallel to the shore and for a minute you hold your breath since the plane appears to be touching down on water. So, ensure you take a day flight to enjoy this adrenaline rush apart from, of course, the emerald studded liquid turquoise that looms underneath. Since it offers a visa on arrival, all you need is a valid travel document and you’re good to go. Since there are no direct flights from Delhi, my hometown, we took a flight to Colombo, SriLanka, and then a flight to Malé after a 2 hours stop-over. Tickets from Delhi to Colombo vary from INR 8000-20,000 depending on the carrier etc. whereas, flights from Colombo to Malé cost anywhere between INR 6,000- 15,000.

Transfer from the Malé airport depends on your particular booking since most hotels send their own airport transfer. Otherwise, there are the traditional Maldivian ferries called ‘Dhoni’ that ferry passengers at regular intervals at a nominal amount.

Climate

Thanks to the constant sea breeze, Maldives stays cool thorough the day, throughout the year. With a temperature ranging from 27-30 degrees Celsius, the weather in Maldives is holiday perfect – bright, sunny mornings; pleasant evenings; and breezy nights. The sun stays along through the day like a much-wanted friend to provide that sunny warmth so integral to holidays. Even the water is of a fine steady temperature and getting in and out will not be uncomfortable at all. Whether you decide to snorkel or dive, the sun reflecting in the water will only make it even beautiful on the outside and even clearer on the inside when you visit the coral reefs. However, the sunset is not be missed either. Just when you’re done basking in the sun, wait for it to go down the horizon splashing the sky with every bright hue you can imagine. Sit mesmerized as ivory melts into gold and gold melts into deep orange and purple shades. If you’re as lucky as we were, you might catch a rainbow after a light rain.

Maldives is known across the world for some of the best holiday resorts. What makes it an even better experience is the fact that all the resorts own the islands they are built on. So if you’re at a resort, all that space is private, nothing but the luxury and opulence of the resort to last you through your holiday. Since we opted for this, we were picked up from the airport in a speed boat that galloped on the waters to reach our resort.

Diving and Water sports top the list when you visit the abundant waters of the Maldivian paradise. As already stated, the sun in Maldives provides easy visibility and keeps the water at a comfortable temperature, diving becomes even enjoyable. All resorts have their own dive centres and qualified dive instructors to take you to another world.

The marvelous formation of over 3000 coral reefs has only added to the bounty of marine life that inhabits the Maldivian waters. Come face to face with over a thousand species of fish and other marine creatures, and what’s more, you can even find a few ship-wrecks if they fit the kind of under-sea world that catches your fancy. Moreover, with some added dives and tests, you can even become a certified diver if that’s a challenge you’re willing to take. Water sports are also available at all resorts and even otherwise. Check with your hotel or guest house for the options available. You may also wish to explore other activities like night fishing and local excursions.

Maldives is also a haven for Bird lovers. Every now and then you see exotic seabirds stop by for a quick snack in the water or just to wet her tired wings!

Maldives is easily a dream destination and every penny is worth it to reach there! The pristine waters – abundant in magnificent lagoons and marine life, sparkling sand, impeccable hospitality, and a colourful culture, add to the delight of the Maldivian experience.
