You like Goa but feel guilty about finding yourself there for every beach holiday? You will pick peace over heads bobbing to loud music in a beach shack? You are a self-afflicting sadist! And want to find out how bad this New Year eve can get without Goa?
Well then you must totally go to Gokarna, a small beach town situated right at the tip of Karnataka and about 150 kilometers below Goa. Before you write me off as a Goa basher, I must say that I have had some amazing memories of Goa. But I also like to discover new places. So next time you are in Goa, I dare you to travel further down to Gokarna.
Go Go Gokarna
Gokarna is about 150 Km's from Goa via a bus or a drive. Keeping in mind the short distance you can either drive/ride down or take a bus from the Margoa bus stand. In a matter of few hours you will be transported to the temple town of Gokarna. The closest train stations are at Ankola and Kumta, both about 25km from Gokarna
After travelling on spotless Konkan roads, you will hit the hustle and bustle of this pilgrimage town of Kumta. You can stock up with daily supplies and then move on to the sunny, beachy side of Gokarna. As you leave the main town behind you will feel the altitude rising just enough to sight beautiful vantage points overlooking the Kudle Beach. The other three beaches include Om Beach, Halfmoon Beach, and Paradise Beach. Om beach is the only beach that is accessible through road, the rest require a short hike and/or a boat ride. My partner and I usually make Om beach our pit stop because of the way the caretakers at Namaste Café (a restaurant and cottage) smile at us and share local gossip/news. It is homecoming to us!
