Trip Introduction

Mahabalipuram (also known as Mamallapuram) is a town of rich and varied history, dating as far back as 1st century CE. It is also home to several ancient sites and structures. Mahabalipuram is one of the oldest sea port of Southern India dynasties, such as the ancient Pallava dynasty(5th and 8th centuries).It is a small coastal town located at a distance of about 59km from Chennai.

In the more recent past, the town was in the news for even more historic sites that were uncovered by the mighty Tsunami in 2004. Whether it is the newly uncovered ruins of an ancient temple or the Pallava dynasty history or simply the beauty of the famous Shore temple, any, or all of them are a great reason to visit this charming town.

How to get there

There is no airport in Mahabalipuram. The nearest airport is Chennai International airport, located about 54 km away. Chennai is well connected to all the major cities in India and also to many international destinations. You can reach Mahabalipuram from the airport by a bus or taxi. By Rail

From Mahabalipuram, the nearest railway station is Chengalpattu, which is 29 km away. For more options, Chennai railway station is the best option. From the railway station you can board a bus or taxi to Mahabalipuram.

By Road

Mahabalipuram is well-connected by road. There are direct buses to and from Chennai, Kanchipuram and Pondicherry. The journey from Chennai by the East Coast (ECR) Road is particularly scenic and memorable as it is a well maintained road offering great views of the Bay of Bengal and beautiful greenery. You can also rent taxis from Chennai city or the airport. It is advisable to book a prepaid taxi that offers safer and hassle free travel.

Mahabalipuram

Local Transport: Mahabalipuram is a small town and you can walk across to most of the places of interest. You can also rent a bike or an auto, though if you hire an auto, you must negotiate the rates in advance. During the day, it can be fairly hot so it may be a good idea to rent an auto. During the evenings it is very pleasant and hence you should explore the town on foot post sunset.
